Ok, before you start making judgments – Mall food is an old past time of mine…kind of like school lunches…when they were good. The mall was THE hang out spot for us high school kids, and the food court was the common meeting space. It was affordable, and gave us teenagers the opportunity to mingle and secretly meet up with friends, that our parents didn’t want us hanging out with – My rebellious phase. Now, the malls are not hot spots for kids to hang out, rather a place where stores are still trying to stay alive, during this era of online shopping. No one has time to go to the store anymore, parents are working longer hours, kids want to stay home and play on their tablets, and prices are on the rise everywhere.
Unlike some, I still enjoy walks in the mall, and of course, revisiting my past in the Mall Food Court. Benefits for me now: the mall is not as busy, and the food court is usually empty enough to find a comfortable seat. Even the different ‘restaurants’ are in high competition with each other, reeling you in with endless food samples.
I always stick with ol’ faithful: Japan Cafe. It’s a Japanese Habachi style fast food, where they cook your food fresh right in front of you, as soon as you order. There are I believe 3-4 choices you can choose from: Teriyaki Beef, Chicken, Vegetable, or Pork. The plates usually come with steamed vegetables, choice of steamed or fried rice, and add-on of an egg roll if you’d like. They keep it real simple. My fiance and I usually order the Teriyaki Chicken, with add-on of another order of meat, and steamed rice – This usually runs us $6.30. They give you a card that has 5 spots to fill, once you’ve filled your 5th plate, you get another for free! Tacky, I know, but it’s better than nothing! We are a family on a budget, so we only splurge on fancy dinners every now and then. *Sigh…this will do for now! Anyways, I can appreciate courteous service, prompt delivery, and delicious freshly cooked meals – even if it’s mall food.
Next time you’re at Lakeline mall, instead of playing it safe with ordering Panda Express, why not take a walk on the wild side and try out something new: Japan Cafe. Revisit your favorite past times, ditching school with your friends, shopping for trendy new school clothes, and meeting up to hang out with that new boy in your life – The worry free days…when your mom could give you $20, and it covered an entire outfit, a meal, and an ice cream. Here’s to hopin’! Cheers fellow foodies, have a fantabulous week-before-Valentine’s! Come to think of it…Austin doesn’t have many malls now that Highland mall is practically abandoned…let’s do a mall food crawl! Affordable & yummy! Plus you can burn everything off by walking around…okay, I’m done for now! Think about it, though!
