A short distance away from our home in Austin, a romantic getaway, and the perfect respite after a long time workin’ – We found our relaxing mini-vacation in the heart of Boerne, TX. Only an hour and a half away from North Austin, this small town proved to be our home sweet home, away. No work,no social networking, just a time to enjoy ourselves without a care in the World.
I spotted the cutest little modern cottage through AirBnB, and couldn’t resist the booking. With traffic in Austin and San Antonio, it took us about 2-hours to arrive to our destination. We pulled up to an eco-conscious tin home, with a giant rain water tank in front of us, instant relaxation begun. Z and I are suckers for tranquil, tucked away environments. Our host kindly escorted us to our temporary home, after she left us be, we immediately began adjusting to our beautifully architectured dwelling. Since it was evening already, we picked up some frozen pizza up from the local H-E-B, and had that for dinner, with some NBA for entertainment. See more of our little cottage on my previous post here.
Although it was bitter-sweet to wake up with the rising sun, and not sleep in, I let the aromas of Z’s breakfast lure me out of bed. Enjoying a freshly cooked omelet made by my honey buns, we were determined to get out there and explore the famous, Main St. of Boerne. This big attraction, where shops of all kinds keep folks buzzed off the sheer originality of each little boutique, was only a 10-minute walk from our cottage.
Turning our first corner, we took more than just a blast to the past, exploring these neat collectibles and antiques at Redbird Retro. You can find anything from original vintage newspapers, records, china sets, baseball cards, cook books, and so, so much more. There are some pretty valuable items in there, for a steal of a deal, definitely stop by and check this place out!
I’ve recently made a vow to myself, stating I would only buy quality clothing, from boutiques or small businesses. I don’t want to wear the same items that everyone else is wearing, and I certainly don’t want it be overly priced for such low imitated quality. After passing by tons more Collectible item shops (Boerne has a lot of them), we stopped by Ella Blue, a young ladies’ boutique to browse what they had. I could have definitely walked away with some sophisticated trousers, or fashionable nightlife wear. The store was clearly organized, and the staff super friendly.
If you’re looking for something for young to middle aged, which is more my style, visit The Alley on Main. I loved all the fine details, and the fashion was rather tasteful. The cuts and textiles used were of great quality, and worth the prices. Although we did not come to Boerne to drop bills, we did walk out with a few candles that smelled divine. I loved how these boutique clothing shops were never crowded, yet the staff was still delightfully attentive and cheerful.
We had to take a little food break, after all, we were on vacation! So, I did some research on places to dine in Boerne beforehand, and The Epicure was one of the places I had a good feeling about. Not quite to the point of grumbling tummies, Z and I split the Tampico sandwich – Fabulous! All of their sandwiches come with a bag of Kettle brand chips. If you want to order a drink or any of the other hundreds of tasty treats, you definitely well could: preserved fruit, truffle oils, gourmet crackers and cheese…oh, the possibilities!
Another place I really wanted to make a stop for was, The Boerne Wine Company. I had never been to a winery before, and this was the closest thing next to that. Gosh, they had an insane collection of wine, and impeccable guest service. Z and I had stopped in, before evening, so it wasn’t busy yet. The wood accents, stone interior, and warm tones, really had me smitten! It’s the neatest thing, you buy a dollar amount on one of their key cards, and you can sample or have a glass of wine from their wine dispensers. I’m no wine Sommelier, but being able to sample so many different wines over time from here, I definitely could learn! The idea with the sampling, is to assist in finding the right taste for your palette. After you’ve sampled your way to your perfect wine, you can buy the bottle to take home, or kick back on their patio, and pour a glass. Z was in love, with the humidor – Cigars everywhere.
Main Street is filled with color, life, and care. All of the boutiques are so well taken care of, the citizens really do love their city. As we kept falling in love with the cute little shops along the way, we grew weary and didn’t want to run ourselves dry before our walk home. Sadly, we had to turn in, and save the rest of our exploration, for another trip…
…but who can trail home without some fuel? Z and I wanted to stop and grab some to-go, so we could kick our feet up and enjoy some good ol’ cable TV when we got home. It’s so easy to just walk in to any and every store on Main Street, so inviting. Say ‘Hello’ to Soda Pops! The menu was simple, the food cooked fresh as you order, and the prices were just right. I wasn’t too hungry this time, so I ordered me a snack, Z got the grilled chicken sandwich that he enjoyed. Next time, I will order a shake, and a burger…dreamy!
Main Street goes on for miles, and there were so many little nooks that we didn’t catch until we were on our way home already. Although there is much more to Boerne, TX than just Main Street, we really enjoyed exploring the small town happenings. Not to get small town confused with undeveloped, the town of Boerne has got it all going on! I dare say, they take more pride in the upkeep of their community, inside and out, significantly more than larger metropolitan cities. They really know how to live, with 75% of shops on Main Street closing before 9pm, everyone gets to go home and spend some real quality time with their families and friends. Everything is upheld with ingenuity and passion, from the shops, bnbs, most importantly the people. Our mission was accomplished here, relaxation, tranquility, and simplicity. We can’t wait to come back, until next time, take care ya’ll!
