Dear future Austin Visitors,
I understand that you may want to visit Austin for its most attractive – attractions, but there is much more to this humble city than meets your eye. I was born here, I was raised here, I moved away from here, and then I moved back. The exponential rate that this quirky town has grown, is truly remarkable. Sometimes I catch myself complaining about why the city is not more like Dallas, more like Houston? Getting caught up in these moments of just selfishly wanting more of my city, sends me back to appreciate why Austin doesn’t need more. It’s got charm, livelihood, and growth – everything you would need in a place that you can call home. For the next few minutes, I want you to check out how I experience my city every day – see you in a few!
1: Take advantage of the beautiful year-round sunny skies, and feed your soul with some indoor/outdoor yoga. There are serene places to practice yoga such as, Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Zilker Botanical Gardens.
2: Sure, go ahead and stereotype us Texans – we’re all cowboys. Not true, but we’ve got horses! Texas is not all plains and cornfields, in fact, there are rolling hills and nature preserves, that could make for a beautiful scenic Austin Hill Country, horseback ride. Yee–haw!
3: Bring your inner-child out, and revisit your long-lost past, with all that Toy Joy has to offer! Literally, like a child again, every inch of old-school games and trinkets made me smile from ear to ear. Just another one of those Austin places that makes you grateful for simplicity. Oh, P.S. Hello Kitty lovers, there’s an entire wall of your Sanrio favorite!
4: This here, is a mural on the wall of the Planet K near my place. I love it! Hemp lovers and other botanists – This place has the goods to grow, and everything else in between. Think…a mature version of Toy Joy.
5: Don’t mind that handsome man to the right, he’s just checking out that panoramic view of Lake Austin, from atop Mt. Bonnell. There are picnic tables and a gazebo for romantic dates, family gatherings, and solo relaxation trips. Tip: wear comfortable walking shoes, as there are steep stairs to climb before getting to Austin’s little piece of Heaven.
6: For many years, the annual free-entry Trail of Lights, fills Zilker Park with festive Christmas lights and decor. Great time to take your kids, or date for an innocent night out on the town. There’s scheduled shows with choirs, bands, and best of all – FOOD! Bring cash for good eats & drinks, and souvenirs! My favorite part is spinning under the giant Christmas Tree of lights – no shame to my game!
7: Take a walk up the spiraled hill of Butler Park – located steps from Zilker Park and the Towne Lake Trail. This photo was snapped after my morning workout, at sunrise. In the summer time, there are water shows where the kids can play and cool off from the heat of Austin.
8: Wooo! One thing Austin knows how to do for sure – Party! There are almost always free entry, RSVP parties thrown by companies such as this Mixology Party by Absolut, at the Austin Music Hall. Free alcohol, themed masquerade party, and live music at its finest. Check do512, or here, for current events and free things to do in Austin!
9: Shop for glass & avant garde crafted pipes here. Because “It’s the DANK” -says BC Smoke Shop. Although I was diggin’ the hip hop/electro music, the place was super clean, and the attendants were professional and polite. Not like any other pipe shop in Austin that’s for sure. The pipes are SO “dank”! Photos wouldn’t do them justice, just go check them out for yourself.
10: Saving the best for last, you can enjoy a sunset anywhere, but why not add to your memories with that beautiful Texas sky? “No caption necessary”
Thank you for spending your time, to see why I love my city, and how you can enjoy your time here as well. I’ve got the drive of a Travel Agent, with the knowledge of a concierge. There’s 365 days in a year, and sky’s the limit with new and fun ways to experience the city of Austin. Let me know if you’ve got questions, or want to hear more about this awesome place I call home!
